I am a journalist and researcher covering Iran and the Middle East, with more than a decade of experience researching and writing on Iran. Before transitioning into journalism, I worked in academia and completed a Ph.D. examining the impact of economic sanctions on sustainable development in Iran. Since moving into journalism, I have expanded my reporting to the wider Middle East, covering conflict and geopolitics in the region. My work spans breaking-news monitoring, Persian-language media monitoring and translation, and feature reporting. Before joining The New York Times as a freelancer, I freelanced with The Associated Press where I worked on OSINT and video verification reporting in Iran. I am fluent in Persian, English and Spanish, and am proficient in Arabic at an intermediate level that I am continuing to develop. I also have training in investigative reporting and multimedia journalism, including broadcast journalist, video editing, and audio production using Adobe Premiere Pro and Pro Tools.
